Day 10 Aug. 9

Stroud to Yukon

Mileage 87

OK so we are Canadians in Canadian Country in Yukon Oklahoma do not ask why seems weird to me.  I always wanted to see the Yukon just never figured it would be this hot and windy.

The the temperature today was 98F with head winds of 20 mph making the Little Ruckus bounce in the gust but we did well with no problems. We finished early and retired to the AC of the hotel.

Dianne was up early and we started off with questionable sky and an odd breeze that pick up into a outride hard blow.   The route was all on State road 66 until we reached Oklahoma City where the Bike route takes you though some historic 1930 communities which were interesting and well kept.

The Towns Passed through today were:

  • Stroud
  • Davenport
  • Chandler
  • Wellston
  • Luther
  • Edmond
  • Oklahoma City
  • Bethany
  • Yukon (Avid hotel)

Davenport was interesting we did a short side trip to see murals and the old brick road.  Never would want to ride far on brick roads.  Then to turn around road through parts of the town.  It definitely has seen better days.  I would say some of the cars were worth more than the homes.   In the hay days it had a canning factory, 3 cotton gins and oil industry.  Sad to see a town slowly dry up like this one has.

Welston the next town was the opposite Route 66B passed though well maintained neighborhoods and a pleasant small city park.

The roads were good today but in some cases just 2 lanes with no shoulders.  So zipped along and would pull over to let the cars pass. There was one car that seemed to feel that having to use his brakes was a volition of his god given right to drive all the time at 65 MPH.

An interesting thing is they paint white swishes in the road to show school zones.

There was field of these old pumps or steam engines (I think pumps)
