Day 14 Aug. 13
Amarillo TX to San Jon NM
Mileage 97
The best way to sum up the ride today is say currently sitting in underwear on a bed drying out.
Towns through today;
- Amarillo
- Bushland (a gas station without people and grain elevator)
- Wildorado (just grain elevators on this side of the I 40)
- Vega (nice town Hickory Cafe has good burgers)
- Gruhlkey (a restaurant and not a lot more do not blink if want to see it)
- Glenrio (All I could see was sign for an exit)
- San Jon
Dianne and I both checked the weather this morning and it said no rain till 4 and only 27% chance of rain today with High UV potential. So we put on sunscreen and started out early. It started raining at 10AM and alienated between a light drizzle to solid rain never quite making it to downpour. When I thought OK it is getting better we are almost through it started to rain again. Dianne would take her goggles down when raining and just keep wiping the rain off my glasses.
For the last few days the object was to reach air-conditioning and today it was get warm. Wait and day and it will change.
The traffic was light in Armarillo and no mistakes in navigating through town. In fact no mistakes at all today. A quick stop at the Cadillac Range and down the road we when. Right after the burger and coffee break in Vega (really to warm up) on to San Jon. The weather went from poor to horrible at Gruhlkey. This is where the route took us onto the interstate again except this time for 22 miles. Dianne was not pleased but the alternatives were worse.
Now we are in a small old motel drying out. It does not like much but the room is clean and the owner a really nice guy.
Last night we did go to the Big Texan Western Steakhouse restaurant. They send a limo to pickup local hotel guests. This free rides important the place is easy to see but hard to get to and from if you do not understand the roads. It was fun and worth the trip for entertainment value. The Food is big portions and really not what I would describe as gourmet. More like a fair steakhouse. They have musicians that come to table and sing songs for you and you can try the free steak challenge which is a 72 oz steak that you have an hour to finish. I had a bone in rib steak with a great whiskey barrel beer and Dianne her preferred ribs.
