Day 15 Aug.14
San Jon to Santa Rosa
Total Mileage 90
Last night’s hotel would not have been Angel Approved but it did get out of the rain and was clean and dry. I notice a lot of the older hotels make money by leasing their rooms by the month. Often I suspect as low cost public housing and this seems to reduce the maintenance somewhat. One truck in the hotel last night had at least 20 animal traps in the back.
After sorting out the gear we went to find dinner and tried the local Indian Truck stop A Taste of India. Eat in was closed so we got take out curry, saga and black lentils with rice back to motel room. The food was good hot and spicy. Then watched an old western on the Tubed TV and off to sleep.
Today Dianne got up and off we went on the next leg being on the road before 8 as there was no coffee to be had.
Towns passed through (Generally we followed I-40)
- San Jon (small most things closed and no traffic at night)
- Tucumcari (stopped at the Pow Wow restaurant for breakfast not busy but good food)
- Montoya (not a building standing a ghost town can see the foundations of an old truck stop I assume)
- Newkirk (gas pump and post office, No working toilets)
- Cuervo (wide spot in road for a short period of time)
- Santa Rosa
The roads were fast running next to I-40 for a long ways. Then after Tucumcari they throw the bike route back on I-40 for 11 miles. Dianne is getting better at running on the shoulder but that was was blocked twice. We waited for a big gap in traffic and gunned around the transport truck and camper trailer in our way. Once past Cuervo the route follows old 66 on 5-6 miles of gravel road. That had it all hills wash boarding pot holes and no cars that we saw we crawled along to the black top into Santa Rosa. But as we turning onto HYW 156 a really nice car started down the road both Dianne and just said wow. Two other things of interest happened one had to ride through a flood portions of the old road, and then pass the road passes through a drainage tunnel not more than 8 feet wide I swear if a car fit in it would not be able to open their door.
Fairly tried today so I will pick up Santa Rosa tomorrow. Tomorrow is a long day 97 miles of limited service so we filled up spare tanks today.
General Landscapes seen today
Old Ranch buildings
All stuff in Tucumcari (Dianne in the Pow Wow with the lizard)
Things seen
- 17 old Route hotels (Tucumcari had a lot of them )
- maybe 30 old gas station
- Did not count them but a lot of old empty looking ranch homes
- 3 fields of cows
- 5 churches
- 4 bug stricks
- 6 roads that ran though the little drain tunnels
- 4 signs that says this road dead ends
- crossed over 6 dry creeks, and 4 with water running in them
- Plenty of pretty scenery
- Tucumcari Mountain (this town was suppose to be a resting spot on the trip for both herd of cattle and Route 66)
- 1 ATV that passed us and then disappeared into one of tiny drainage tunnels
Wow! New Mexico already! Temps are climbing where you’re headed. Stay cool and hydrate.
ReplyDeletethis week has been cool in the 80s late afternoon and 70 in the mornings
DeleteI can not think of 2 more adventurous people. Enjoying your blogs. It's like being there but without the effort. Appears yesterday's leg had lots of obstacles but that "No Coffee" part sure must of been the hardest part of Alan's day. The Ruckus 66 trip seems to be going as planned, appears that you guys had a good plan and your executing it like pros. Can't wait for you 2 to get back to Indiana, though. Selfishly, need your (I'm thinking Di's) help to relearn how to water ski again. Enjoy and Keep Staying Young!
