Day 16 Aug. 15
Santa Rosa to Santa Fe
Mileage 126
Long long day made it though and saw a lot of interesting stuff in Pecos National History Site.
The route followed 1-40 to start then ran north to I-25 it then followed 1-25 south to Santa Fe.
Towns (and slow spots on the road) passed through:
- Santa Rosa
- Dilia (has a church)
- Romeroville (has gas station)
- Santa Jose (passed by the town so do not know)
- Lifeld (I did not even noticed)
- Rowe (Gas station if you can find it)
- Glorieta (Claims to have post office)
- Stanta Fe (thanks heavens)
I promised to start with yesterday afternoon after checking into the hotel. We went to local route 66 museum. Saw cars I would like to own, or knew people that owned them and was impressed by by the fact they do sell some of the cars. Highest price I saw $250,000 cheapest $26,000.
Then had a Mexican dinner which was great and Dianne then opted for an IceCream stop. After that we hit the pool for a before bed sleep.
Started with a fast run on the shoulder of I-40. Then on a road that ran to Las Vega reached wiith-in 10 miles of it and then turned around and headed south to Santa Fe.
The park is at the site of a Pueblo build in an area with 12000 years of human occupation. The Native Americans build 5 story pueblo and they had maybe 20 Kiva for worship. The Spanish came and build a huge Church in the late 1615 there and when that was destroyed in 1680 by the pueblo revolt rebuild it 3 more times.
- After the tour of the park we found our route was closed bridge was out so we had to back track to get back on trail. That is when the thunderstorm hit. We were luck and had a bridge near by where we ducked out. Not only was it wet it was hard hail too so were most happy to get out of the wind and rain. It stopped and cleared and it looked OK so we started out. But the rain gods were angry they missed us with the best so they blow the clouds back in rained on us after were moving. Did not last long then cleared up for the last 10 miles to town.
All seen at the Route 66 Museum in Santa Rosa

Sites Seen today
- One guy openly carrying a pistol with a mask on and full beard to his chest.
- 2 guy dressed as old time cowboy leading their housed down the side of the road and both carrying long rifles
- 18 motorcycles one group ride.
- 4 people including us standing under a bridge in the storm next to motorized vehicles (including us)
- 5 bug strikes (for the record I only count big bugs we passed though several patches of gnats and counting those would close to infinity)
- Interestingly only 4 old hotels in Santa Fe and no old gas stations
- 4 idiots passing on solid lines. (One car pass even though there was an on coming car that had to pull over onto the shoulder. I guess the guy was in a rush to give his money to the casino.)
- 4 crows
- I very lively Prairie Dog
- 1 very slow badger
- 6 crows
(Andy F.) I love it out there - truly a whole different world. I wish I could have dinner with you all! Say hello to the Prairie Dog and badger for me.
ReplyDeleteThe Prairie Dog will appreciate the wish the Badger looked pretty slow I mean really really slow I mean not breathing slow. You need to watch the Monty Python Parrot skit to understand.
ReplyDeleteLove the pics! I love the west.
