Day 22 Aug. 21

Flagstaff to Seligman

Total mileage 74

It was a fast run followed by a very long wait is a very small town.

The route today followed I-40 with scenic rides along old Route 66.

The towns we passed through were:

  • Flagstaff
  • Parks (just a gas station and some RV parks)
  • Williams (had a McDonalds and a rodeo today)
  • Ash Forks (had murals old gas stations and once was the start of Railroad)
  • Seligman

We finished our ride at noon and we did not want to go another 60 to 80 miles depending on who you believe for distances. So we stopped at our hotel (Historic Route 66) expecting to get in but they were still cleaning room.  Now they had just the last people leave and were just starting to clean.  This I can understand we were early.  So we went and had a bite of lunch at the Roadkill Cafe (nice spot good food).  The hotel had no other waiting customers but they started to clean at room 1 and went all the way to room 16 so they finished our room at 3 pm. How or why they did at least clean a room for us I do not know I mean 3 hours in this little town looking at the tourist traps and antiques is enough to drive anyone crazy.  But the cleaning said at 2:30 I am sorry I have had to clean all the rooms today so I am just now getting to yours.  But there is no waiting for Rooms 1-15.  To really make me mad a car pulled up at 2:20 just as we were walking over to check in without a reservation and they give him room 14 UGGG.

OK enough about idiot cleaning staff that can not think out of order.

The ride took us through the downtown section of Flagstaff and dumped out on I-40.  We climbed to 7335 feet and crossed the Arizona divide.  It then put us on Old route 66 with some excellent high mountain scenery that include climax pine forest and one or two birch trees.  Back on 1-40 for a huge down hill that just kept going for more than 5 miles with spectacular mountain views in front behind (when I checked on Dianne in the rear view mirror) and beside us.  When I saw a sign stating “lane closure at mile 138 expect delays” my heart sunk I did not the mad dash again across.  My sprites rose up again when I realized that I would be getting off at mile 139 onto old Route 66.  We sailed along into boredom finishing as I said at noon.

In the town of Ash Ford a Harley pulled out and stated to follow when I stopped for picture he stopped to.  Turns out he saw in New Mexico and could not believe how far we had come on those “scooters”.  Wanted know how they were working and if we had any problems.  Then he took a card and rode off on his 1998 Soft Tail I believe.  Nice guy.

Comments

  1. We stayed in Williams, AZ last October. Remember having a nice breakfast at a local restaurant. Very touristy as it is the "gateway" to the Grand Canyon NP. Safe travels!

  2. Yes you are correct it is very small. Seligman had more Route 66 trappings. I think Williams is more of train and Grand Canyon Place.
