Day 4, Aug 3
Edwardsville IL to Eureka MO
Total miles 68
Low millage day but it was a hard travel day getting through St. Louis but we did make it! No even talked to us in St. Louis while rideing. One people even gave us directions.
Nice thing in Comfort Inn is they had a breakfast not a good one just packaged food but better than nothing and we had a second cup of coffee after eating rather poor breakfast sandwiches.
The Roads would take forever to lay out so here are the towns:
- Edwardsville
- Granite City
- St. Louis
- Ellisville
- Eureka (Super 8)
Just leaving the Comfort in a car pulled up behind us and started beeping because we did not jump out across the Hwy. I got annoyed and flipped him off that made him wind down his window and yell at us, "to learn how to drive". I was waiting for one more car and he pulled up beside us in the entrance lane and yelled “you idiot do not know how to drive do you?”. I said, “I guess not sir”. He then peeled rubber out of the drive and cut off the cross traffic. Not a good start.
Stopped in Granite City for the Luna Cafe with the Cherry that was lite when the girls were working. Rumor is it was a favorite with the gangsters of Old.
After filling with gas we rode over to the Chain of Rock Bridge. This was big point of discussion you see we are not quite a bicycle and for sure not big enough to play on the interstates. Once we got to bridge road it was closed. After a short discussion we decided to chance it. Got to the Canal Bridge and people were working on it. Asked if we could cross the first guy said “you saw the road close sign”. I said “yes be can not get on the interstate with these!” Second worker looked and said, “those are bicycles so OK cross.”
At the Bridge meet Lisa and Mitch they had ridden a tandem form LosAngles and still were talking. However they did name their bicycle.
We rode slowly across and on the other side were faced with closed chain gate. I lifted the chain and pushed the scooter under. So now we have crossed the Mississippi and maybe only broke a couple minor laws.
The ride to the Arch was tough as the route follows the river on a nice bike trail. We are not allowed. So by winding around the industrial section with lots of searching after another road closures we finally found the Arch in Downtown. Parked the bikes and walked around the Arch, took pictures and had a good time.
Then picked up map route and the route took us right to Forest Park the World's Fair Site. This took time to probe our way though slowly and carefully. It was really busy lots of cars and people add One way streets and we toured the complete park. We did finally make it out. Once back on the maps we found the hotel with with only one missed turn. Now relaxing after the 7 hour day.
Still discussing dinner Dianne does not want to ride the scooters but she loves the Idea of Mexican.
